All your domains are belong to us

cumberbun writes: There’s a new agreement in the works between ICANN, those folks who oversee the domain name system, and the companies that manage the .net, .org, and .info Top Level Domains (TLDs). Wait! Before you yell BORING! or WHERE's MY FUCKING PORN! there’s some stuff here you might find INERESTING if you use the internets, and I’m thinking that maybe you do. So read on for links and more.

One of the gems in the new contract allows for differential, uncapped pricing. You may buy your domain name from a Registrar like eNom or Godaddy, but they are just low-margin middlemen. They have to turn around and pay $6 (in the case of dot com) for each of those names to the Registry, for, well, keeping track of all those domain names and their information. To clarify: there are lots of Regristrars, but a TLD like .com or .org has only one gatekeeper for all that domain information.

The new contract lets these Registries charge *whatever they want* for new registrations and renewals, and to set prices on a *domain by domain basis*. In a nutshell, this means that the more your domain is worth, they more they are going to charge you for it. They might even charge so much that you can no longer afford to renew. If that happens, they get to auction off your domain to the highest bidder. They can also charge more for adult names, or shut down websites which criticizes them by charging $10 million dollar renewal fees.

Didn't read the linked articles, but what was written in the post was disconcerting. Thanks for the heads up.
